The |sphenoid bone| is located on the ~anterior~ part of the base of the |skull|. It is a wedge shaped bone with a central portion and two wings extending outward. On the superior surface of the central portion, or body, of the bone is a deep depression called the |sella turcica|, or pituitary |fossa|, where the pituitary body sits. The sphenoid and |temporal bones| on each side of the |skull| are attached to the lower edge of the |parietal bone| by the |squamous suture|.
